Who Is Courtney Whitmore?

Posted on

If you are a DC Comics fan, then chances are that you have some familiarity with Courtney Whitmore. However, how much do you really know about this character?

Courtney is an interesting addition to the DC Comics family of superheroes. She has an interesting history that includes a name change and is instrumental to the success and longevity of the Justice Society of America.

The History of Courtney

According to the DC Fandom, Courtney came upon her superhero status by mistake. She was actually trying to make fun of her new stepfather, Pat Dugan, who was responsible for her having to move from her hometown in California to the boring landscape of Nebraska. She had stumbled upon the equipment he used when he was Stripesy, the only adult who ever acted as the sidekick to a teen superhero.

Wearing a patriotic outfit during her school’s spirit week dance as a jab at Dugan, Courtney had no way to know that the Dragon King was planning on attacking. To save the school and bring about order, she and her stepfather came together to defeat the minions.

The result was the creation of a new superhero duo: Star-Spangled Kid and S.T.R.I.P.E. The man that she once had little regard for was now her partner in fighting evil.

After the debut of the duo, Courtney went on to fight evil with Young Justice. She also battled the Dragon King’s villainous daughter, her arch nemesis, Shiv. Along the way, she also worked alongside Starman and the Shining Knight to battle the Dragon King.

Alas, all good things must come to an end, and when Starman decided to retire, he passed down his legacy to Courtney, the Cosmic Staff, she was reborn as Stargirl.

All About Stargirl

As Stargirl, Courtney puts her skills in hand-to-hand combat, gymnastics and kickboxing to good use as a junior member of the Justice Society. She made great friendships and learned new skills in her time with them until the group was broken up.

At that point, she began college and made a change to the equipment she used when fighting evil. Instead of the staff, she had a compressed rod that would grow when activated and made her costume appear.

Once the JSA reformed, Stargirl becomes a full member. However, things didn’t last as fighting among members led to a split between old and new. Stargirl went with the JSA All-Stars.

The Television Series

The Stargirl television show, produced by Geoff Johns, follows Courtney’s adventures as she leads the cosmic staff and inspires the formation of the Justice Society of America. The series began production in March 2019 with the premiere of the first episode in May 2020.

The show focuses on Courtney’s origin story as Stargirl. It allows viewers to get to know the teen and her stepfather who is so instrumental in propelling her forward as a superhero. Episodes focus on telling different stories that highlight Stargirl’s abilities and Courtney’s struggles as a teen.

It airs on the CW network. The overall vibe of the show is very old-school with elements that harken back to the 1980s. It is meant to show the takeover of the JSA by a new generation with a focus on how Stargirl acts as a leader to bring about success. Despite some failures and setbacks, the good over evil trope plays out well in the storylines.

That’s A Wrap

Courtney Whitmore is definitely not your ordinary teenager. She has a lot more on her plate than worrying about grades, acne, and who will take her to the next dance. With her alter ego being the amazing Stargirl, Courtney has a lot going on to ensure her life is never boring.

Types of Pianos

Posted on

Pianos are a beautiful part of any orchestra and can also make mesmerizing music on their own. When most people think about pianos, a beautiful, glossy black grand piano with the top open is probably what pops into their mind. This is definitely the most “grand” of all pianos, and so earns its name. It isn’t, however, the only kind of piano and not the kind most people have in their homes. So whether you’re interested in the instrument because you need piano restoration West Covina CA or you’re considering taking up the trade, learning more about its types can help you decide the best kind for you.

Types of Pianos

Types of Pianos

The first type is called a spinet piano, and it’s the smallest version of the instrument. This type of piano has plenty of moving parts, including hammer-like mallets to strike the strings inside. Next in line from the spinet is a console piano, which is slightly larger but still small enough to be the most popular in-home piano. It’s an upright piano that produces beautiful quality sound and is great for beginners and experts alike. There is also the studio piano, which stands taller than the spinet or the console but still has a fairly thin backside, making it not entirely obtrusive in a home but more frequently found in studios. It’s known for producing a richer quality of sound than the other two types because it’s used mainly in music composition. Then there’s the famous grand piano, which is aligned horizontally and takes up the most space. The arrangement of the strings produces a particularly beautiful sound, but does need to be in a large room with high ceilings for the full effect.

The type of piano can affect the sound of the music, so keep that in mind when picking out your next instrument.

Bass Player Gigging Must-Haves

Bass Player Gigging

If you’re a bass player traveling to do some gigs with the band, you’ll probably want to go prepared with everything that can help. Here are some good things to consider bringing along to help keep things from going wrong in ways people might not even often think about.

You don’t need so many tools to do a full setup, just enough to get the gig finished with at the least. With some tools for repairs like a small screwdriver set, an Allen wrench set, a pair of wire cutters, etc. you can adjust bridges, open battery compartments and replace strings.

Extra Bass Strings
While breaking a string isn’t as common for bass players as it is for guitarists, it can still happen. There’s nothing worse than breaking your G or D string while slapping and popping. It can be dangerous when it breaks off! Therefore, always have an extra set of bass strings on hand.

You never know when something of yours might quit working, or when that can happen to another musician with you. Sometimes someone forgets something or has issues with their gear, it happens. Things like a clip-on tuner, packages of batteries, spare guitar cables and spare straps are always good to carry.

Business Cards and Smartphone
Business cards are an essential for getting yourself out there and getting more gigs. You never know who you’ll meet and who can get you more of the connections. By just talking, there’s no guarantee people will remember all the details or even how to spell your name or your band’s name. Of course you can always record it all on your smartphone too. It’s helpful to have a Facebook, Instagram or even a website that you can market which can be included on your business cards.

Duct Tape
Duct tape is one of those things that you never know when you’ll need, and it could probably go recommended to anyone traveling. As a musician though, you could need it on a windy day to keep something like a sheet down or a set list. You could also use it for taping wires down so nobody ends up having a bad trip over one. Really though, there are all kinds of uses for it even outside of those things, so it’s just good to have if you plan on traveling with the band or on your own.

Bass Pedals or Effects Box
Although not necessarily a strict ‘must-have’, effects pedals, like bass chorus pedals for instance, can make your bass playing sound even better. Otherworldly sounds and crazy effects can turn your boring bass lines into unforgettable melodies on their own.

Pain Relievers
Playing any instrument all day can take its toll on you, so pain relievers are great to have in times of problems. From sore wrists and bleeding fingers to repetitive motion injuries, bass playing can cause injury. You could always try playing through it, but it’s just another thing you could end up facing that you don’t want to have distracting you from the gigs.

Ear Plugs
As any musician should know, ear plugs are important to avoid risking hearing loss. It’s recommended for any musician, and although not everyone might do it, most who know better do. Playing without them just isn’t worth the risk, but it’s up to you in the end. One moment you’re headbanging though, the next moment one has fallen out so you’ll want to bring extras.

Bug Spray
As a musician you, don’t want to be caught having to play while a ton of itches are covering your body. The best way to avoid that of course is by having bug spray. You don’t always know what the place you’re going to be playing at will be like and how many mosquitoes will be in the area so it’s always better to be safe about it instead of being distracted by bites and itches.

Steps for Choosing a Piano That Sings

Posted on

When you catch the mellifluous tones of a piano floating from a window in passing, you can readily tell whether you are hearing a recording or a live instrument in play. A playback system cannot capture the complex harmonics produced by the real thing. Because a piano is a complex machine, the process of manufacturing is very involved. As such, variations exist within even the same model. Therefore, it is important that you think carefully about your needs when leasing or buying a piano.

Know Your Space

Before you can make any other decision, consider the location where you will sit the piano. That will determine your choice of style. If yours is a small space, such as an apartment, you will likely need to select an upright. Given a bit more room, a baby grand will fit. You can place a classic grand on your list if want to fill a large room with big sounds.

Check the Sound

In a world of online shopping, it becomes easy to become accustomed to sight-unseen purchases. Do not succumb to a sound-unheard buy. Visit the store where you will make the purchase and play several pianos; invite a friend along to play so that you can stand back and hear how the instrument projects. Ask the dealer which one should respond best to piano pitch raise tuning Fresno CA since you will want to periodically have it tuned.

Check Your Wallet

If you have not done so already, determine which of the pianos to which you have narrowed down your choice fits your budget. You will want to feel a positive vibe every time you sit down to play; financial stress will limit your enjoyment.

A good piano will provide years of playing pleasure. The key to attaining that note is doing the right research so that you find one with which you can live in harmony.
