Alec Jhangiani, LSFS’s director of programming, commented: “It’s a great privilege to promote Shapter’s work, which complements Lone Star Film Society’s mission to promote independent artists, both in film and music.”
“With such a large independent music scene in Fort Worth and the surrounding areas, especially Denton, we feel that this is the perfect film to kick off the Fort Worth Weekly Music Awards, which is a great celebration of independent music.”
Along with the screening, the LSFS is bringing the documentary to life with a live performance by the acclaimed jazz musician, Ephraim Owens, who is showcased in the movie. Before the Music Dies features the 36-year-old Dallas native along with other artists like Billy Preston, Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, Elvis Costello, Dave Matthews Band and Erykah Badu. As an added bonus Red Young, the 2008 Hall of Fame Fort Worth Weekly Winner and Adonis Rose, the Best Jazz Artist Fort Worth Weekly winner for 2007’ & 2008’ will be sitting in and playing before and after Ephraim Owens’ performance.
“With the screening of Before the Music Dies the Lone Star Film Society hopes to show the companionship of independent artists and celebrate the spirit of creative dimensions such as music and movies”, Jhangiani said.
“We also hope to give yet another example of why Fort Worth is such a dynamic and cutting-edge city for all of the arts, including music and film.”
Released in 2006, Before the Music Dies is a documentary directed by Shapter and produced and edited by Joel Rasmussen. With outstanding performances and revealing interviews Before the Music Dies takes a critical look at the homogenization of popular music with commentary by some of the industry’s biggest talents like Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, Elvis Costello, Erykah Badu, Branford Marsalis, Bonnie Raitt and more. Using historic footage the film looks at the evolution of American music and the artists who created it and pulls back the curtain (in a very creative way) to expose the sad truth behind today’s “artificial” music stars. “The reality is that superficiality is in,” says Marsalis. “And depth and quality is kind of out.” Inspired by the death of his brother, director Andrew Shapter and his crew traveled thousands of miles, visiting dozens of cities, speaking with hundreds of fans, journalists, record executives and musicians while searching for “real” American music. What they found were mega-talents without a major label, including one artist Eric Clapton believes is “the real thing.”
Shapter’s follow-up film Happiness Is is an exploration of the meaning of “the pursuit of happiness” in America. The documentary features people from various aspects of life and work—from the Dalai Lama to Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and people on the street. (Excerpted from IMDB.com.)
